We created an artificial intelligenceāintegrated writing material for high school prep program students. We selected writing as the focus skill and the past tense as the target structure. While preparing the material, we followed the pre-task, target-task, and post-task stages. In the pre-task stage, we added short activities to recall studentsā past tense structures and prepare them for writing. Therefore, students were warmed up on the topic before moving on to the main task. In the target-task stage, students were expected to write one paragraph about an event they experienced in the past. After completing their writing, students identified their errors by receiving feedback from ChatGPT and revised their paragraphs accordingly.
In the post-task stage, we added short reflection questions that encouraged students to think about the learning process. We aimed to reinforce studentsā use of the past tense structure and to evaluate the AI-supported learning experience. This assignment demonstrated that artificial intelligence can be effectively integrated into the language learning process.
Our worksheet:
We removed the grammar topic and focused solely on the writing activity. We provided shorter and clearer instructions and explanatory sentences. Lastly, we added a peer activity section at the end of the worksheet. In this way, students can share their output with their peers and receive feedback from them.
